Aldo Cicala founded this excellent Italian trattoria, on Žitná street, back in 1997. You’ll still find Aldo at the restaurant, supported by an array of family members, some of whom weren’t even born when the place opened.

Žitná is a busy, scruffy street. The entrance to Cicala almost looks like an Italian deli – all you can see from the window is a deli-style counter. Further back is a room that once had ambitions to be an upstairs pizzeria, but has now become a Cicala family room – you’ll meet various friendly family members as you pass and find your way downstairs into the main restaurant.

Perhaps the street anonymity is why the place became the favourite haunt of numerous movie stars while they are filming in Prague – you can check out the various pictures on the restaurant walls. Anonymity aside, the food is what keeps them coming back.

I took this picture, early evening on a Monday night – any other time, I’d recommend you make a reservation.

The antipasti misto with bruschetta (350 Kč) for one is enough for two to share.

Especially if you add the artichokes that were a special (70 Kč).

My favourite pasta dish is one-half ricotta and mushroom panzerotti (280 Kč for a full portion) and one-half linguine pomodoro (270 Kč for a full portion) – so it’s handy if your dining companion would like the same.

If you’re still hungry (we are usually full), try some meat with spinach and rosemary potatoes.

A half-litre carafe of red house wine (240 Kč) is very drinkable. A carafe of tap water is free – so Cicala is now on our list of Prague restaurants where tap water is free.

I’d recommend a visit. I usually walk down from IP Pavlova. If you take a taxi, there is a space outside where the taxi can stop – just get out of the right-hand side, as the street is always busy with cars.
