Marthy’s Kitchen is a small cafe bistro offering pastries, breakfast and seasonal dishes. Sadly, we won’t be returning until the owners change their policies.

There are two branches; we visited the original, on Francouzská street, a short walk from Náměstí Míru. They only take cash.

The interior is pretty, although I imagine it could be too hot inside during the summer.

Our waitress was friendly and we ordered a 0.5l carafe of Sangiovese (170 Kč) and a carafe of water (nice to see that was free).

The wine was truly terrible – it may have been okay when first opened, but it tasted oxidised (like sherry). We explained the issue and the waitress took it away. We then played it safe with two glasses of Prosecco (85 Kč per).

I chose Eggs Benedict with asparagus (280 Kč). This was a good version of the dish, although would have been better with meat or smoked salmon added.

My companion chose a chicken galette – a savoury pancake filled with chicken, pea and mint purée (260 Kč). As they were out of purée, we agreed that they make whatever substitute they thought best. The result was a lovely filling pancake, with peas, asparagus and cheese added.

Payment, in cash, is at the counter. The amount requested seemed a little high and so I asked if the red wine was included – yes it was. The waitress explained that any losses, including bad wine, were taken from her salary. Although shocking, I still asked for the wine to be removed – she did that and then I added a 100 Kč tip.

I can’t recommend Marthy’s Kitchen, as the owners (Martin and Kristina) don’t deserve customers if they treat their staff in this way.
