Mix a Hitchcock masterpiece with a juicy spy novel, add a dash of Monty Python and you have ‘The 39 Steps’, a fast-paced whodunit performed brilliantly by the Prague Shakespeare Company.

Divadlo Na Prádle is a small theatre, just a short walk from Újezd tram stop in  Malá Strana. The theatre has a nice bar for pre-performance and interval drinks.

The theatre was slightly chilly (was -3 outside), so bring a sweater.

The play was entertaining and funny. The following paragraphs contain spoilers, although none that would spoil your enjoyment of the play, nor reveal the ending.

Jim High, was superb as the protagonist Richard Hannay – a toff, living in 1930s London and looking for adventure.

Richard, sits in his London flat and talks about his boring life.

Sinead Phelps, Michael Pitthan, Marc Cram, and John Poston were all excellent, playing multiple roles throughout the performance.

Richard, now on the run from the police, takes the train to Edinburgh, sharing a compartment with two underwear salesmen.

Richard is mistaken for the guest speaker at a political rally.

Richard and love-interest Pamela (Sinead Phelps), on the dark and foggy moors, attempt to navigate a stile while handcuffed together.

Richard and Pamela, still handcuffed together, try to check in at the McGarrigle Hotel.

The cast were applauded with several ovations.

There were plenty of laugh-out-loud moments together with a compelling story. This is a play that you shouldn’t miss. You have four more chances; two in February and two in March.
