During this latest lockdown, I have again been ordering delivery food and rating each restaurant. So which restaurant was the best based on food quality, how tasty, value and packaging?

This time around I’ve ordered only from Wolt – Uber Eats no longer operates and my experience with Dáme jídlo was poor.

Obviously, this isn’t an exhaustive list as it is driven by my location and cuisine preferences. It’s also difficult to compare a pizza with a complete restaurant meal – a lot is based on expectation. These ratings are based on food quality, how tasty, value and packaging. I usually add a 30 Kč tip for the courier irrespective of the cost of the order, type of food etc.

Emi Restaurant

Order Spring roll (60 Kč), Duck and Lemongrass curry (2 x 179 Kč), Jasmine rice (40 Kč)
Price 497 Kč including a delivery fee of 39 Kč
Delivery Service Wolt

Emi inhabit the space that used to be U Emy Destinnové. The duck curry is okay, but nothing special – I’m sure it used to be better. The packaging is always leaking and messy on arrival. We’ve only ordered once from Emi during this lockdown and probably won’t again.

McDonalds IP Pavlova

Order Single Big Tasty Bacon meal (2 x 139 Kč), 4 x Chicken Strips (89 Kč), Croissant (2 x 39 Kč)
Price 445 Kč plus delivery fee of 39Kč
Delivery Service Wolt

It’s great that McDonalds are on Wolt now that Uber Eats have closed their Czech operation. For a while, you could only order via Dáme jídlo and so I just stopped having McDonalds delivered.

The Big Tasty is probably the only burger we have from McDonalds – it’s a good burger, excellent value and the ingredients appear good quality. You can choose a salad and an orange juice as part of the meal – the salad is okay, the orange juice is really good. The Croissants are better than you would get at Paul and stay fresh until the next morning. The chicken strips – well they are a tasty, fried, pre-processed, dirty secret.

Sadly McDonalds at IP Pavlova can’t seem to get the order correct. On one occasion they forgot to include the orange juice and salads – Wolt offered a partial refund, or to deliver the missing items and we chose the latter. On another occasion they forgot the chicken strips and we took the partial refund.

I always struggle over the ratings for the Big Tasty. Of course a burger from Dish would likely be better, albeit three times the price. So please don’t blame me for putting 10/10. I’ve put 1/10 for packaging as they forgot items twice.

Le Pizze di Frankie

Order Salsciccia & Mushroom Pizza (220 Kč), Fume Pizza (210 Kč)
Price 469 Kč including a delivery fee of 39 Kč
Delivery Service Wolt

I had high hopes from this newly-opened pizza place near Náměstí Bratří Synků. I tried to order on two occasions and they had stopped accepting orders as they were too busy. When I did manage to place an order, with estimate of 25 minutes, the estimate was later revised to one hour.

The pizzas were smaller than average, but with a thicker base – the ingredients seemed good quality. Perhaps it was the expectation, but we decided that Giallorossa Vinohradská was still a better pizza.

Giallorossa Vinohradská

Order Pippo Pizza (219 Kč), Diavola Pizza (219 Kč)
Price 492 Kč including a delivery fee of 54 Kč
Delivery Service Wolt

I’ve had several pizzas delivered and they are always tasty. Sometimes the truffle oil is missing from the Pippo. The pizza isn’t always cut enough and doesn’t separate into slices when tearing. But they remain my preferred pizza service.

Las Adelitas Americká

Order Beef Burrito ( 2 x 249 Kč), Guacamole (115 Kč)
Price 652 Kč including a delivery fee of 39 Kč
Delivery Service Wolt

I think Las Adelitas best offering is beef burrito and guacamole. The burrito’s are very good, full of meat and come with a side of sour cream, re-fried beans, chilli salsa and onion.

Lasagneria

Order Bolognese Lasagne (2 x 169 Kč)
Price 377 Kč including a delivery fee of 39 Kč
Delivery Service Wolt

Lasagneria’s best lasagne is the classic Bolognese. The portions are a good size and there’s usually enough left for a small lunch the next day.

Bruxx have done well to become the best delivery food. I’d previously slated them for their ridiculous Fish & Crisps dish – which is still on the menu but now seems to include fries instead of crisps, although I haven’t ordered it.

So how did Bruxx reach top place? Firstly, they offer a good value daily menu that doesn’t compromise on portion size nor quality. Secondly, they offer sous vide meals that take just ten minutes to prepare – so you can order a daily menu for that evening and a sous vide meal for the next evening. The packaging is excellent, so I don’t mind that they add 10 Kč for that.

The packaging and presentation of Bruxx meals is excellent. Here, the Duck breast with potatoes and cabbage.

The chilled sous vide meals arrive in a lovely gift box.

Inside, there are the vacuum pouches and instructions – basically put them in hot water for ten minutes. This one the Belgian Meatballs with mash potatoes.

My only criticism is that there is no ‘best before’ date – the instructions just say ‘use immediately’.

Always order local and choose a dish that won’t suffer from a quick microwave reheat

If you choose a restaurant that isn’t local, the delivery fee will be higher and the food will likely be cold. Couriers can often carry multiple deliveries and if you are third on the list then the food will suffer.

Almost everything you have delivered will require a zap in the microwave – so choose a dish that won’t suffer from that process.

Stop using delivery apps when the current restrictions are lifted

All the food delivery operators take a hefty percentage from the restaurants they serve. You often see platitudes from them that mention how they are ‘glad to support businesses during these trying times‘.

If these operators really wanted to support restaurants, they’d offer free restaurant registration and halve the commission fee they charge on each order – I’ve read that can be 30-40%.

When restaurants do open, please support them by visiting and dining in the restaurant. Not only will they save the commission fee, you’ll enjoy nicely-plated, hot food, delivered to your table by a lovely waitress, while you enjoy a glass of wine within the ambience of the restaurant.
