I can’t believe that Sova (The Owl) has been open for over two years and we’d never heard about it. We really enjoyed our dinner there and Sova has been added to our list of ‘regular-visit’ restaurants.

The entire restaurant is below street level – we had to climb a few stairs down, so it isn’t wheelchair accessible.

The place has an eclectic feel, with unusual lampshades…

…and a collection of owls along the bar.

We ordered a couple of glasses of Italian red (75 Kč for 0.15l) and despite lacking detailed provenance, was pretty good. A carafe of water was free. So a good start; reasonably-priced wine and no charge for water.

We ordered ‘260g Duck Breast with cabbage gratin, baked apple mousse’ (315 Kč) and a ‘200g Filet Mignon (filet de bœuf) with Celery Mousse, pickled vegetables and potato gratin’ (380 Kč).

Both dishes were perfectly cooked and delicious.

We’d seen a nearby table receive a theatrical pudding, which turned out to be the ‘Signature Dark Beer Ice Cream with Buckwheat Mousse’ (135 Kč). It arrived with a dry-ice effect, which you can’t see here.

We also had a ‘Chocolate Fondant with Mango Sorbet’ (155 Kč).

The chocolate fondant was a clear winner, despite the lack of theatre.

I took a stroll around. The bathrooms were modern and clean. There was another room at the back of the restaurant, which looked good.

The price and quality at Sova probably didn’t help U Matěje, where we visited the following evening. Both offer modern Czech cuisine, but Sova did everything better and as a bonus we could also walk home!
