Beckett’s Irish Pub and Restaurant, Vinohrady, Prague, Czech Republic

The streets of Vinohrady are full of restaurants and bars – it’s a really popular area for both Czechs and Expats – plus a few tourists who decide to wander beyond the centre of Prague.

I remember when this space was occupied by a pizza place called La Romantica (wasn’t very good), then Knajpa (better but something missing). Now the place has been completely refurbished as a modern Irish Pub.

You won’t see old sewing machines turned into tables, nor pictures of a horse and cart here. But the place still has an Irish Pub feel, not least because of the Irish owner, Graham, who is there more often than not. Long-time visitors to Prague will remember Graham who was part of the original James Joyce team – the one that used to be on Liliova and first Irish Pub in Prague.

The Guinness (0.5l at 95kc) is excellent and exactly what you would expect from an Irish Pub. The lager is Staropramen, although I prefer Gambrinus – if I’m drinking Staropramen, then I go for the non-filtered (Nefiltrovaný).

Food is where Beckett’s really comes into its own. The menu is actually quite small, but I think that’s a good idea for a new place and a new kitchen. My two favourites so far are, Fish & Chips and Sunday roast beef dinner – both really good quality.

There are a couple of big screen TVs and they show all the usual sports. But if you want a rowdy sports bar with perhaps a few stag groups cheering on their teams, this isn’t the place. It’s also non-smoking.

Now the weather has improved, I see that new tables have appeared outside. There’s a large area out front and I’m guessing that it will be pretty popular in the summer.

Free-Wi-Fi.
