16th January update: Well it looks like this was very poorly attended with only twelve people – there were more journalists than participants.
This Sunday marks the 15th Annual No Pants Subway Ride. As you can guess from the title this, admittedly silly, event started in the USA. As the event is now celebrated in numerous cities around the world, I added the various language versions to the title. The most important thing to remember is that participants should wear underwear – in England, pants are called trousers and the underwear is called pants.
The No Pants Subway Ride is an annual event staged by Improv Everywhere every January in New York City. The date changes from year to year and is announced in early December. The mission started as a small prank with seven guys and has grown into an international celebration of silliness, with dozens of cities around the world participating each year.
The idea behind No Pants is simple: Random passengers board a subway car at separate stops in the middle of winter without pants. The participants behave as if they do not know each other, and they all wear winter coats, hats, scarves, and gloves. The only unusual thing is their lack of pants.
I don’t know the plans for each of the 40-odd cities that have signed up, but I do know what is happening in Prague this Sunday 10th January…
Participants are invited to meet on Sunday, Jan. 10, at noon. at the Wenceslas Square (Václavské náměstí) station, with people meeting behind the statue of St Wenceslas, or ‘under the tail’ as people call it. So no random boarding but that makes it easy to wander down and see what is going on.
There was big turnout in Prague in 2014, with a couple of hundred of people riding for about a little less than an hour and changing trains several times, eventually heading to a pub.
The event in 2015 was much more low-key. Photos show a much smaller crowd. The 2015 ride occurred a short time after the Charlie Hebdo attacks in Paris, and people might not have been in the mood for such silliness.
Below is a video from last year’s Prague event:
