Wizz Air is a low-cost Hungarian Airline. I only use them to fly between London Luton and Prague, although I did once fly Prague to Milan. Like most low-cost airlines, the initial flight is cheap and then you have to pay for checked luggage, large (bigger than a laptop bag) cabin bag, priority boarding, reserved seating etc.

Wizz Air already has a number of programs aimed at frequent flyers; Wizz Discount Club, that offers a discount on booked flights and Wizz Privilege Pass, that has currently offered a free large cabin bag and priority boarding.

Until now, I have added ‘Reserved Seating’ to my booking and that provides a guaranteed seat in the first two rows of the aircraft. Even with a Privilege Pass, this still meant I had to pay another few Euros. However, that still meant that I had to try and board first in order to sit in my favourite seat 1D.

Wizz Air have just announced that they will add an assigned seating option to all their bookings from 19th May. They are currently trialling this on the following routes:

  • Barcelona – Budapest
  • Katowice – London Luton / London Luton – Katowice
  • Bucharest – Dortmund / Dortmund – Bucharest

This is great news for those who want to pay and choose a specific seat. Maybe not so good news who don’t as they may end up in a middle seat and not being able to sit together. It’s even better news for Privilege Card holders, who can now choose any seat for free.

The Wizz Air fleet comprises Airbus A320 aircrafts and the seat map is as follows:

Wizz Seats

The actual cost of seat selection is not yet available on the Wizz Air website. I’ll update this post when that becomes available.

There are some rules that affect your eligibility to select a seat..

Extra Legroom seats:

Seats with extra legroom are located in the emergency exit row. For safety reasons, passengers listed below are NOT eligible to be seated in an emergency exit row:

• Passengers under 18 years old
• Overweight passengers
• Passengers requiring special assistance
• Pregnant passengers
• Passengers travelling with infants (under 2 years old)

Front Row seats:

For safety reasons, passengers listed below are NOT eligible to be seated in row 1:

• Passengers under 18 years old
• Overweight passengers
• Pregnant passengers
• Passengers travelling with infants (under 2 years old)

Wizz do later clarify overweight as excessively overweight!

So my favourite seat 1D just got better; it’s now free and I won’t be sitting next to any excessively overweight passengers or crying babies.

You can view more about this change on the Wizz page here.
