It was hard to find good quality food at reasonable prices in Karlovy Vary. We’d eaten the previous night at Le Marche and that was very good apart from that they charged us 90Kc for some bread and tapenade that was brought to our table.
I spent a long time online trying to find somewhere and I’m not even sure how I found Tusculum – it was number 29 on Trip Advisor, with 13 excellent reviews, albeit all of them in Czech or Russian. Hopefully my five stars (same review as here) will push them up the list.
Tusculum is part of the Pension Tusculum which seems to have a number of good quality rooms at reasonable prices.
We accidentally took a long route from the Hotel Pupp to Tusculum. We went up above Karlovy Vary and walked around and down again. On the way back I realised that Tusculum is easy to get to by just walking along the river and walking up the street by the artificial pond/lake.
There were good value Czech wines on the menu, but we got carried away and ordered an expensive bottle of Malbec – which was excellent. We were able to order a jug of tap water without any problems.
The waitress was really helpful and friendly. She brought us a jar of home-made pâté and bread – which we were delighted to discover was complimentary.
We both had:
Beetroot carpaccio with goat cheese – 120 Kč
Pork tenderloin cooked in a vacuum, glazed beetroot, carrot puree and glace – 240 Kč
and everything was delicious.
We enjoyed the pâté so much that we bought a jar to take home with us.
I would definitely return here if I found myself in Karlovy Vary.
